Transitioning baby to solid food

Guess who's eating cereal now?!
Transitioning baby to solid food – this is always a dilemma for young moms. It’s hard to decide when to do it but there are of course signs when you feel that your baby needs solid food. Shaina Olmanson who is a mother of four wrote a great article about this topic, she writes:

How do you know when the baby is ready? Look for signs that your baby is ready to start eating solids. Generally this happens between 4 to 6 months of age, and most doctors recommend waiting until 6 months before introducing solid foods.

She also adds:

What should you offer as first foods? You can always buy foods specifically for baby, but I tend to pull out a few steamed vegetables or a piece of soft fruit to mash and puree for baby. I do this before salting or adding spices. A food mill is relatively cheap, and it’s a worthwhile investment if it means you’re not buying prepackaged baby foods all the time. (I tried to limit prepackaged baby foods to when fresh, local organic and in-season produce wasn’t available in the winter or for when we’d be out of the house during mealtime.)

10 things that you shouldn’t buy a pregnant woman for Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is almost here and you want something romantic and nice to your pregnant wife or partner. I know it’s really hard to be romantic at this time. All the aches, the pains, the swollen feet, the big belly –  well, there’s nothing romantic about it. Husbands and partners try hard but many times they fail when it comes to buying something nice for Valentine’s Day. Fortunately there ‘s a bit of help because Katie from babble.com collected 10 things that you shouldn’t buy a pregnant woman for Valentine’s Day. The list is 100% priceless 🙂

She writes:

That said, this year, I think his challenge is greater, because pregnancy gift giving can be a little like a field full of land mines. Now, barring something horribly offensive, I would never turn down or be anything but grateful for a gift, but there are just some things that you should never buy a pregnant women, either for the implication of the gift or for the fact that it is just so not something she needs at this point in her life.

Forget giant maternity underwear, lingerie or wine:

These seem like another way to get your wife something “intimate” but sorry, there’s nothing intimate about underwear the size of Jupiter. I’d like to pretend like my husband doesn’t even know what my underwear look like right now, even though I largely refuse to wear anything but my pre-pregnancy underwear. It’s still not a pretty sight.

Freebies for moms

It’s actually amazing how many companies are willing to give away freebies for moms. I was quite shocked when I noticed first time  that big manufacturers want me to try their products. First I didn’t understand but I figured it out that they only want moms to introduce their baby food, their diapers and different baby products so you likely to buy from them in the future.

There are of course different ways to get freebies for moms – lets check them out how:

  1. First it’s a good idea to make a list what you have to buy to your baby on a regular basis. This list will contain all the most important things like diapers, clothes and baby formula or baby food. In this way you’ll know approximately how much money you’ll spend on these basic things.
  2. Then go online and search for the companies that sell these products. They will send you different samples so you can try them out before you buy – try as many as possible and you won’t end up buying products that your baby doesn’t like or you don’t like.
  3. When you’ve found these baby products search for offers online or in your local baby store. There are actually many offers that you can avail you only have to look for them. These offers are usually printed on the back of the products.
  4. Fill out as many offers as you can by hand or online – it’s up to you. Always give realy name and address otherwise the companies won’t be able to send out free baby samples or freebies for moms. You can also find online surveys which can also help you to get some free baby stuff. Try to fill them out as honestly as possible so your account won’t be marked as spam. After this you’ll get great free baby samples by mail.
  5. You may ask how long does it take to get these samples. Well, it takes a couple of weeks – let’s say 6 weeks at least. Be patient because it’s worth it and you’ll end up with useful baby samples that will help you to save money.

Try these tips and you’ll be amazed that there are companies that will send you freebies. There are no tricks or gimmicks they just want to convince you to try their products and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Baby names origin and meaning

Every mom and dad has to find the perfect name for their baby. It was quite easy for us. I really adore the girl name Naima and I knew if we’ll have a girl her name will be this beautiful name which actually means “graceful”. If it’s a boy it’s gonna be Noel Patrick which is a French and Irish combination. We like both names.

If you want to find out baby names origin and meaning you should check it on Babyzone.com. According to them:

Choosing the perfect name for your baby can be a daunting task. Whether you’re looking for popular baby names, unique baby names, ethnic baby names or something more traditional, you’re sure to find plenty of inspiration and baby name meanings in our selection of fun baby boy and baby girl names.

I’m sure you’ll also find the perfect name for him or for her!

Predict your baby’s gender

I have to confess I’m as curious about my baby’s gender as other moms. Unfortunately I don’t know it for sure but it’s fun to try i.e the Chinese Lunar Calendar. You have to enter your birthday and the month of conception then just click on the big Go button. Of course you can’t be sure about this and it’s advisable to wait until you doctor confirms it but it’s fun to try. I have to emphasize it’s only for entertainment purposes. I won’t tell you what’s my prediction – it’s a surprise 🙂

Let’s find out how does it work:

By crossing the month a child was conceived with the age of the mother at conception, it is purported that you can determine the birth of your unborn child. For instance, a 30-year-old woman who conceived in January would give birth to a boy, according to this calendar. Remember, the Chinese Lunar Calendar is based on the month the baby is conceived and not when the baby was or will be born. The calendar is also designed to work only for women with calendar ages between 16 and 43.

Healthy snacks for pregnant women

As I’m in my second trimester healthy snacks are becoming more and more important in my and my baby’s life. I try to eat healthy anyway, I really like fruits and vegetables and now I try to stick to healthy snacks too. My favorite site – babble.com – collected the 10 healthy snacks during pregnancy. They are healthy, filling and good for the mom and for the baby too.

Katie writes that multigrain crackers are her favorite snacks:

It’s quick, easy, portable and depending upon the types of cheese and crackers you buy, it’ll get you some healthy carbs, lots of fiber and help you with protein and calcium. Plus, it’s just plain delicious.

or if you like something sweet during pregnancy you can try fruit smoothies – I really love them too:

I have to confess, I was never a smoothie person before pregnancy. But my love of fruit has gotten even greater with this baby. My normal smoothies are made of orange juice, greek yogurt and frozen fruit. My favorite combination is OJ, yogurt, frozen mango and a few frozen strawberries. Warning, if you add too many frozen berries, you’re going to have a seed overload. Play around with fruits, juices and yogurts you like, you won’t be sorry.

Sometimes I go for fresh fruit such as banana. They are really delicious too.

Newborn care guide

I can’t really tell you how I love babble.com. It helps me a lot during my pregnancy. They also have a must-have newborn care guide which can be pretty useful – no matter how many kids you have it contain loads of great advice. It’s a step-by-step guide about the time when you leave the hospital and the weeks and months after. There’s information here about:

  •  breastfeeding
  • baby’s health and well being
  • mom’s health and well being
  • sleeping
  • swaddling
  • diapering
  • crying
  • bathing
  • grooming
  • and many more.

The newborn care guide also tells you that:

While the bassinet may be assembled and the car seat installed, you might be starting to realize that it’s still hard to fully prepare yourself for how you feel, both physically and emotionally, in the first postpartum week. Keep in mind that this time is an adjustment period for even experienced parents, and it’s completely normal to feel a little overwhelmed with the enormity of what just happened.
